i love Saint Etienne

I was already a Faith Over Reason and Field Mice fan (thanks, I think, to Mike Jones and Andy Dean) when I heard Saint Etienne's versions of 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart' and 'Kiss and Make Up'... it would have been in the Bear in Maidenhead, or maybe Skindles

Fox Base Alpha would have been played on the record counter when I worked university holidays in Boots, and I'm pretty sure I shoplifted the second album, on tape, from WHSmiths - it was in the sale section, so the tape was in the box, rather than behind the counter

then there was that Glastonbury in 1994 that Cath and Dave I went to - the one where the Manics said they should build a motorway through it:

there is just hit single after solid gold hit single, Hug My Soul, Pale Movie, Sylvie and the Bad Photographer!

ans then, more recently (I've got the Monkees Head soundtrack... ON TAPE!)

I think what i'm trying to say is - Saint Etienne singles are always amazing, and here's another one!

Release Date - Woodpigeon & Norman Blake

as you may or may not know, wiaiwya-7777777 is a seven inch singles club, a very ambitious seven inch singles club, due to last for seven years

today we reach the mid point, the 25th single of the set...

The Woodpigeon and Norman Blake 45 is the sound of the Laurel Canyon recorded on a feather, with a bit of Prefab Sprout and Fairport Convention added for good measure; delicate wispy harmonies, intimate acoustic instrumentation, and the West Coast feel that Glaswegians do so well.

Woodpigeon is fundamentally Mark Andrew Hamilton writing songs. Starting off in Edinburgh (with members of eagleowl), then moving to Canada for the band's first full-length album, entitled Songbook, released in late 2006. Three years later the second long player, Treasury Library Canada c/w Houndstooth Europa was long-listed for the Polaris Prize, and Hamilton served as the curator of the first annual Sled Island Festival in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
2010 saw the band's third album, Die Stadt Muzikanten, then 2012 marked a move to Vienna and 2013 the release of Thumbtacks + Glue on Fierce Panda.
Woodpigeon has collaborated with over 70 musicians, and has played alongside Withered Hand, Ólöf Arnalds, Broken Social Scene, Patrick Wolf, Iron and Wine, Grizzly Bear, and Calexico, has appeared as part of Ray Davies’ Meltdown, and played Iceland Airwaves festival twice.

Of course Norman Blake needs no introduction, but here goes anyway: Norman has been recording hits since the Boy Hairdressers ep in 1986, after a stint in the BMX Bandits he formed Teenage Fanclub in 1989, two years later they released one of the best albums of the 90’s – Bandwagonesque… aside from 10 Fanclub LPs (with another in the pipeline) Norman has recorded with Joe Pernice, Euros Childs, Jad Fair, the Pastels, Tenniscoats, Kevin Ayers, Bill Wells, The Reindeer Section, Snowgoose, Yeon Gene and The Pearlfishers.

Today we’re adding Woodpigeon to that list.

wiaiwya-7777777 2014 - the illustrators: Jeff Mellin

each picture disc from wiaiwya-7777777 2013 will be illustrated by an amazing artist, this week we'll be introducing you to each of them:

JEFF MELLIN is a multidisciplinary artist, singer/songwriter and award-winning art/creative director. He’s illustrated and designed for magazines, arts non-profits, literary presses, food manufactures and high-tech companies.
While immersed in the 90s Boston music scene he got a reputation as a go-to guy for album packaging and poster design. Since then he's worked with countless bands and record labels looking for his vintage-inspired aesthetic and musically informed sensibility.
He reviews student portfolios for the Art Institute of Philadelphia, has been invited to speak to college and high school students about artist branding, judged the Connecticut Art Director's Club Awards, and has appeared as a guest panelist at the Chrysler Museum of Art with Sub-Pop/Nirvana photographer Charles Peterson to speak about album cover photography.
He’s also collaborated on multi-media performance installations in NYC, Boston and Philadelphia, and his video collaborations with photographer John Soares (as Soamel Pictures) have been selected for the Philadelphia Independent Film Festival, the New York City Indie Film Festival, and the Arlington International Film Festival. His most recent semi-abstract films and photographs ("abstralographs") discover and disconnect geometry from reality, flattening 3-dimensions and inverting perception of negative space while balancing organic, inorganic, and atmospheric forms and textures.
As a songwriter and musician, he’s been releasing recordings since the 90s, including recent singles for London’s WIAIWYA Records featuring memebers of SHRAG, Jenny Dee and Doug Yule of the Velvet Underground, and a concept album with Delicatessen’s Neil Carlill. Oakland-based poetry press Kolourmeim Press has published a collection of his lyrics.
With his brother, the NYC-based composer Joel Mellin, he’s helped to promote the creativity of others with both Stereorrific Recordings, a small underground pop label, and Waxfruit Arts Media, Inc., a not-for-profit organization he co-founded to support and create projects connecting indie music with other media arts and the community at large.
Now based in Philadelphia, he continues to work and collaborate with creative people from all over.
