The Wedding Present and Cinerama release 49th single:

London indie label wiaiwya is very excited to be putting out a new split single from The Wedding Present and Cinerama on 7th December 2018, featuring covers of two hits originally released in 1977 – The Clash’s ‘White Riot’ and ABBA’s ‘The Name Of The Game’.


I’m sure I don’t need to tell you this, but The Wedding Present formed in Leeds in 1985, Peel loved them, they signed to RCA in 1989. Steve Albini produced Seamonsters, which came out in 1991, and the following year they had a run of twelve top-30 singles, equalling a record set by Elvis Presley.

The band’s singer and songwriter, David Gedge, recorded the first Cinerama album, Va Va Voom, in 1998, this project became his full time band until, in 2004, Cinerama morphed back into The Wedding Present. Since then both bands have been alternating between celebrating anniversaries of classic albums and releasing all new classics.

To date, The Wedding Present have released 35 singles, including 1992's Hit Parade series. Their first, “Go Out And Get 'Em, Boy!” was released 33 years ago.

Cinerama have released 13 singles since 1998.

Making this the 49th single released by both bands and their first as a joint release.

This is also the 49th (and final) single of the wiaiwya-7777777 7” singles club and the pressing is limited to 777 copies – it’s almost like we planned it!

Earlier this year Pete Astor spent a day in the studio with The Wave Pictures’ rhythm section, Johnny Helm and Franic Rozycki.


Back in 1980 Pete Astor was in The Living Room, who went on to become The Loft, who signed to Creation – releasing the label’s 9th and 15th singles. In 1986 he was in The Weather Prophets, who released two albums for Creation. By 1990 he had gone solo, releasing another two long players for the label. 1992 saw a move to Danceteria in France for a further two albums.

After a busy start, the 1990’s were a quiet decade for Pete musically, but he returned before the millennium with Ellis Island Sound (who signed with Heavenly Recordings) and The Wisdom of Harry (who eventually signed to Matador Records).

The 21st century has seen regular solo and Ellis Island Sound releases on hip young labels, most recently Static Caravan, Fortuna POP!, Slumberland and Tapete.

He works as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Westminster, where he teaches, researches and writes about music; in 2014, he published his study of Richard Hell and the Voidoids' Blank Generation, as part of Bloomsbury's 33⅓ series.

Peter Cook was part of a four-man group satirical stage show, Beyond the Fringe, with Jonathan Miller, Alan Bennett and Dudley Moore. In the 60’s, Cook opened The Establishment club in Soho, provided financial backing for the satirical magazine Private Eye, made the tv show Not Only... But Also, as well as the film Bedazzled, both with Dudley Moore. He co-hosted Saturday Night Live, released three Derek and Clive LPs, and in 1978, Cook appeared on the British music series Revolver as the manager of a ballroom where emerging punk and new wave acts played… AND he was the Impressive Clergyman in The Princess Bride. He died on 9 January 1995, aged 57.

Pete Astor, on the other hand, is always great.”

I was already a Faith Over Reason and Field Mice fan (thanks, I think, to Mike Jones and Andy Dean) when I heard Saint Etienne's versions of 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart' and 'Kiss and Make Up'... it would have been in the Bear in Maidenhead, or maybe Skindles





Fox Base Alpha would have been played on the record counter when I worked university holidays in Boots, and I'm pretty sure I shoplifted the second album, on tape, from WHSmiths - it was in the sale section, so the tape was in the box, rather than behind the counter

then there was that Glastonbury in 1994 that Cath and Dave I went to - the one where the Manics said they should build a motorway through it:

the Orchids formed in Glasgow in 1985, releasing their first flexi, on the Sha La La label in 1987

"I've Got A Habit" came in 1988 - it was the second single release on the legendary Sarah Records

Their fourth single, "An Ill Wind That Blows" was released on Caff, the label run by Bob Stanley (of the band Saint Etienne) - the label also released 7"es by Pulp and the Manic Street Preachers

In 1989 the Orchids released Lyceum, the first long player on Sarah Records (described by Melody Maker as "Another fountainhead of unqualified greatness")

This was followed by Unholy Soul (1991 - "A beautiful album – timeless melodies for sure."), Epicurean (a compilation) and Striving For the Lazy Perfection (1994 - "Encompassing everything from dream pop to trip-hop, it's certainly a product of its time and place, yet it also possesses a certain timeless quality")

All three albums were produced by Ian Carmichael, a member of One Dove

In 1995 the Orchids played at the Sarah Records farewell party on board the Thekla in Bristol

The band then when quiet for just over a decade before releasing their fourth album proper in 2007 - Good To Be A Stranger - "it doesn’t matter if this is just a one-off because the Orchids have added another classic album to their already impressive back catalogue"

Fans just had a three year wait for The Lost Star, and their sixth album, Beatitude#9 came out in 2014

I Never Learn / Echos (Have Hope) is their 10th single, and is released by wiaiwya on 7th August 2018

back at school Jim Little gave me a C90 tape, called Demented Folkies On Speed Extravaganza, and one side was the first Weather Prophets LP - all the songs seemed to be about rain, and I loved that... still do...
